Planícies

The Planicies, or the Plains of Portugal, cover a relatively large area of the country’s southeast. This region has a little bit of everything, untouched grasslands in the northwest, deserted plains in the south, gorgeous deserted beaches to the west and rolling highlands with cork oak and olive trees to the east.

Beginning in the north of this region, we have Castelo de Vide. This mountainous region is known for its many castles, some of the oldest in Portugal! The ancient castle of Castelo de Vide dates back to 12th century and is well worth the journey through town to reach it. Just a few minutes from here is Portalegre, which has long been known as the region’s market center. Here you can find historic churches and monasteries, beautiful white-washed homes as well as fine ancient tapestries.

Southeast, almost on the border of Spain, lies the fortified town of Elvas. Make sure to visit the 2000-year-old Aqueduct, the romantic Castle and the famous ancient octagonal church of Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos.

Towards the center of the Plains region is perhaps the most well-known city in the region, the charming walled city of Évora. This city is very impressive with some of the most beautiful architecture, not to mention the ancient Roman temple and tall Doric columns, which were given world heritage status by UNESCO. This 2,000-year-old monument attracts thousands of tourists every year. Also, don’t miss the Cathedral where you can find an extensive collection of Sacred Art and the city’s University which is one of the most characteristic in Portugal. Not too far from Évora lies the medieval Monsaraz castle, which rests on a hill above the River Guardiana.

Heading southwest you will encounter Alcácer do Sal, which also has a gorgeous castle set atop a hill overlooking the town. If you go a little further southwest you will run into Sines, one of the best-kept coastal areas in Europe. Perfect for those who like secluded beaches.

Finally, to the southeast is the very old and romantic village of Serpa. Founded in 400 B.C., it is one of the oldest towns in Portugal. Nowadays it is famous for its creamy sheep cheeses.

If you are looking for endless and inviting natural beauty, look no further, the rolling hills and rich pasture lands of the Plains Region is perfect for your Destination Wedding.
