Azores

The Azores archipelago is synonymous for tropical paradise for those who love nature. This group of nine virtually untouched islands is an extraordinary example of the rare unspoiled beauty left on Earth. The Azores enjoys year-round mild temperatures and its tranquil shorelines provide an abundance of swimming, snorkeling, diving and sailing activities. Inland there are countless biking and hiking excursions available, as well as innumerable unique photo opportunities.

This tropical paradise is located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, almost halfway between the European coast and North America. The islands are divided into 3 groups; the eastern islands (São Miguel and Santa Maria), the central islands (Pico, Faial, Terceira, São Jorge and Graciosa) and the western islands (Flores and Corvo). Each of the nine islands of the archipelago has an individualized landscape; however all have exuberant greenery, sapphire blue water, fertile prairies and verdant rolling hills with colorful hydrangeas and azaleas.

São Miguel – The largest of the nine islands in the Azores. Its capital is Ponta Delgada, where surprisingly more than half of the Azores’ entire population lives. While it is the most populated city, it still maintains a rural feel. Here you can find luxury resorts, fine dining and a chic nightlife. Don’t miss the famous green and blue lakes or the healing thermal hot springs, surrounded by majestic forests and lovely botanical gardens.

Santa Maria – The third smallest island of the Azores, known as the yellow island for its yellow crops. Its surface area is approximately 38 sq miles (97 km2) and there are about 5,500 inhabitants. It was here that Christopher Columbus’ crew first disembarked.

Pico – The second largest island is known for its extraordinary volcanic cone which rises majestically from the island’s center to an altitude of 7,713ft. (2.351m). It is the tallest peak in the mid Atlantic and in all of Portugal. Pico’s capital city, Madalena, provides excellent shopping and plenty of fine dining.

Faial – Its capital, Horta has a very famous yacht harbor where sailors from all over the world have left their mark. Don’t miss Peter’s Café where all the sailors can be found. Also make sure to visit "Capelinhos" where the volcanic eruption of 1957 added on about 1.5 miles (2.4 km2) to the island’s area.

Terceira – The third largest island has its capital is Angra do Heroismo, whose historic center has been classified on UNESCO’s International Heritage list. Here you can find historic monuments, plenty of shopping, excellent restaurants and charming hotels. Terceira is well known for its bullfights, golf course, good wine and relaxed atmosphere.

São Jorge – The long and narrow island is 35 miles (56 Km) long and only 5 miles (8 Km) wide. Its mountain range is spectacular and its highest peak, the Pico da Esperança at 3,455 feet (1,053 m) offers stunning views of the other islands in the central group. The island’s magnificent mountainous range drops to flat pieces of land near the ocean; these are the famous "fajãs" where many vineyards and orchards grow.

Graciosa – Known as the white island due to its landscape and names given to certain areas on the island. It is most famous for its typical windmills and tiny islets covered in lush vegetation.

Flores – The westernmost point of the Archipelago and of Europe. The island’s name comes from its plethora of wild flowers. Make sure to visit the Lagoas, which are seven lakes surrounded by beautiful flowers.

Corvo – The smallest of all the islands and a true tranquil sanctuary. Enjoy the simple life of a small community, with only 400 inhabitants! Don’t miss the two lovely lakes with nine tiny islands, just like the archipelago.

The rare beauty of these nine islands is truly breathtaking, perfect for an incredibly unique Destination Wedding. Give your wedding guests an invitation to discover and experience a different world, where there is time to stop and appreciate life. The Azores islands are nature in its original splendor. Can you think of a better backdrop for an extraordinary Wedding Reception?
