The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli is the place where St. Francis lived, worked and died. The church stands at the foot of Assisi, just 5 kilometers from the centre of the town, and boasts a fine collection of paintings by Andrea Della Robbia and frescos in the subterranean Cappella della Porziuncola. The Basilica di Santa Chiara, is a gothic building, and another magnificent church with its distinctive two-coloured façade, the Duomo with its museum containing other frescos, a gothic shrine of  the Wood of the Cross and a primitive crypt.
