Destination Weddings in the Canary Islands

Why not get married in the Canaries? These seven sunny islands offer everything from lively cities and beaches to national parks, which encompass rain forests and volcanic plateaus.

The islands are Roman Catholic and weddings are usually held in the local church. You will be able to draw on the best of Mediterranean culture for your wedding day in the Canaries - delicious food, great wine and a relaxed atmosphere. Traditional music is played on an instrument known as a timple, and you may like to incorporate typical Canary Islands melodies into your wedding ceremony or reception.

Visitors flock to the Canaries every year, drawn by their superb beaches, warm seas and great nightlife. While you could happily spend all your time here soaking up the sun, the islands have much more to offer, with an amazing variety of landscapes.

Of the four Canary Islands national parks, the most impressive are Garajonay and Timanfaya. The former covers an expanse of 4000 hectares, with a dense laurel forest at its center. The various mountain peaks offer great views across the island. By contrast, Timanfaya National Park showcases the results of a six year volcanic eruption - dramatic twists of solid lava. The entire island of Lanzarote, where this park is situated, has been declared a biosphere reserve by Unesco.

The two main cities are Santa Cruz, on Tenerife, and Las Palmas, on Gran Canaria. Both feature extensive beaches, bars, restaurants, terraces, museums, shops and historic architecture. This includes a cathedral in Las Balmas, and a baroque church in Santa Cruz, which is one of the busiest ports in Spain.

A Mediterranean wedding in the Canary Islands will be a wonderful experience, guaranteed to be infused with sunshine, happiness and great memories.
