Oriente Province, part of the Amazon basin, is mostly covered by wild jungle and rain forest. Local villages and towns make an ideal base from which to take tours of this picturesque region.

Otavalo is only a small town, but it is known all over Ecuador for its Indian market, held each Saturday since pre-Inca times. This festive event is hosted by the Otaveleños people in traditional dress, and beautiful handmade crafts are on sale, including tapestries, scarves and blankets.
