The Danish colonial past of the town is evident in it's bilingual street signs (written in both Danish and English) and its historic warehouses, painted in a myriad of pastel colors. Charlotte Amalie's main landmark is 17th century Fort Christian, which is a distinctive ochre color. The fort has now been converted to become a museum of natural history. For views of the capital, head up to Blackbeard's Castle, which stands atop Government Hill.

For a panoramic view of the entire island, the best vantage point is Drake's Seat, in the center of St Thomas. St Peter Mountain is higher, but its forested peak means that the views are better from lower down its slopes. A series of verdant hills traces its way through the island, with forested ridges separating St Thomas' many bays and coves.

St Thomas boasts over 40 beaches. The best known is stunning Magens Bay, on the central north coast, where you can relax for hours on expanses of soft white sand. For the most secluded beaches, head to the west coast of the island. All manner of water-based activities are popular here, from snorkeling and scuba diving to sailing and boating.
