The wedding ceremony, known as the Akad Nikah, is often an intimate affair, and the real celebrations begin at the reception. You may well choose to hold this in a hotel ballroom or convention center, which will be decorated with bouquets of flowers. As your friends and family arrive, they will sign your guest book, a wonderful souvenir of your day. As they deposit their gifts, an Indonesian tradition is that they receive a thankyou token.
Traditional music will be played as you make your grand entrance into the reception hall. Everyone will then enjoy the wedding feast, a great opportunity to try cuisine from different regions of Indonesia.
The island of Java is home to more than half of Indonesia's population, although it is fairly small - about the size of England. Pretty jasmine flowers are traditionally used in wedding celebrations here, and the bride and groom are often dressed in black velvet - although you may of course wear a western wedding dress if you wish.
Bali is truly picturesque, a dreamlike destination for your honeymoon. Explore the tropical forests and rice paddies, marvel at the towering volcanoes and relax on the beaches. Other popular islands are Sumatra, which has a huge variety of wildlife, and Lombok, with lovely beaches and a tradition of dramatic dance which is fascinating to watch.
